Why Guarulhos Airport is Temporarily Halting Dry Cargo Imports

News

The cargo terminal at Guarulhos Airport, one of Brazil’s main entry points for goods, is experiencing a significant backlog of import shipments. In response, the GRU Airport concessionaire has announced temporary measures to ease the flow. See below how this situation, which intensified in October, started and how it’s impacting the country’s import and export logistics.

Reasons for the temporary suspension:

  • A sudden increase in cargo volume: Import demand has surged, overwhelming the system.
  • Limited space and infrastructure: The terminal’s current capacity cannot accommodate the high volume.
  • Communication and system issues: Importers are experiencing difficulties with communication and system reliability from the concessionaire.

Which cargo will be impacted?

The acceptance of dry import cargo will be suspended from 12:01 a.m. on November 7, 2024, to 11:59 p.m. on November 11, 2024. During this period: only perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, COMAT, and live animals will be accepted at the terminal.

Measures by GRU to normalize the flow

To manage the cargo buildup, GRU Airport is implementing several actions:

  • Cargo separation: E-commerce and in-transit international cargo will be sent directly to customs warehouses, bypassing the TECA GRU.
  • Expansion of warehouses: Two new warehouses have been added (for storage and retrieval of dry import cargo).
  • Discounts on cargo pickup: Throughout November, discounts of 20% will be offered for cargo picked up on Saturdays and 40% on Sundays and holidays.
